Cape Cod Tech Senior Hosts Skin Cancer Awareness Seminar
May 19, 2011, Harwich, MA Cape Cod Tech Senior Marissa Mitchell hosted a skin cancer awareness seminar as part of her senior project on Friday, October 14th. More than 100 students had the opportunity to learn about the dangers of skin cancer and how to protect themselves. The seminar included guest speakers Deirdre Arvidson, a public health nurse with the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment, and Katie Riley and Lindsey DeMarco from the Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope. Students also had the opportunity to watch a video message from Glenna Kohl, a 2001 Barnstable High School graduate who succumbed to melanoma at just 26 years old, and to hear in her own words how dangerous sun tanning can be. Marissa provided students with information about melanoma and free samples of sunscreen to protect themselves, and students also had the opportunity to have their skin assessed for sun damage. The Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope will be hosting its annual Angel's Masquerade fundraiser on Saturday, October 29th at the Ridge Club in Sandwich. For more information, visit www.glennasfund.org. |
