| Welcome to the Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope Web Site The mission of the Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope is to carry on Glenna’s work to bring awareness to everyone about the dangers of melanoma and the importance of early detection and prevention of this deadly disease. Glenna Kohl was our daughter. She was a sister, a niece, a cousin, and a special friend to so many who will never forget her. She lived life with a purpose and fought for her beliefs to the end, never giving up and always smiling. We hope in these pages you will learn about Glenna and understand why this cause is so important. Glenna never wanted anyone to have to go through what she did, and we are dedicated to carrying on her fight for Hope. |

| What is Melanoma? Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It begins in skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its color. Melanin also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. When people spend time in the sunlight, the melanocytes make more melanin and cause the skin to tan. This also happens when skin is exposed to other forms of ultraviolet light (such as in a tanning booth). If the skin receives too much ultraviolet light, the melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally and become cancerous. This condition is called melanoma. Click here to see the risk factors for Melanoma... Tanning Fact #1: People who use tanning beds once a month before the age of 35 increase their melanoma risk by 75% Tanning Fact #2: Melanoma kills one person every hour. It is the second most common cancer for women aged 25-29. Rates for melanoma are increasing faster than nearly all other cancers. Tanning Fact #3: It is not safe to tan in the sun or in a tanning booth. The more you tan and younger you start, the more likely it is that you will get melanoma. More Tanning Facts...
